Maha Sivratri is a hindu festival celebrate annually in honour of the God Shiva. 

The name also refers to the night when shiva perform the heavy dance. 

This is a shivaratri in every luni-solar month of the Hindu calendar, on the month 13th night/14th day  but once a year in later winter and before the arrival of summer. 

It's  major a festival in Hinduism, and this festival is solemn and marks a remember of "overcoming darkness and ignorance" In life and the world. 

It's observed by remembering shiva and chunting prayers, fasting and meditating on ethics and virtues such as honestly Non-injury to other, charity forgiveness and discovery of shiva. 

According to South Indian calendar, Maha shivratri is observed on chaturdashi tithi during krishna paksha in the month of magha, and in other part of India. 

In kashmir shaivism, the festival is called HAR-RATRI or phonetically simpler health or health by shiva devotees of the Kashmir region. 

The Maha shivratri is mentioned in several purans, particularly the skanda purana, linga purana, and padma purana, the medieval of shiva texts present different version associated with this festival and mention fasting, reverance for icons of shiva such as the lingam. 

:Maha shivratri food:

Potatoes ,aloo kadhi, aloo tikki, aloo khichdi

Non cereal dishes, milk based beverage. 

Fruit and dry-fruits. 

Pakodas and vadas. 

So this type all food is eaten when you follow Maha shivratri and shivratri and also other liquid like water and the special shivratri drinks called 'BHANG' is drink by the people. 

It's also popular in India. Nepal. Other Hindu people in USA, UAE, and other countries etc. 

What is the story behind mahashivratri? 

The history of shivratri, purana contain many stories and legend describing the origin of the festival. 

According to one during the samundar manthan, a pot of poison emerged from the ocean. 

The terrified the gods and demons as the poison was capable of destroying the entire words, and they ran to shiva for help. 

:Mahashivratri vidhi(process) :

According to Drikpanchang, one day before shivratri vratam, most likely on trayodashi. 

Devotees should eat only one time. On shivratri dat, after finishing morning rituals devotees plegde for Self-determina through out the fasting period. 

And seek the blessings of Lord shiva to finish the fast without any interference. 

Hindu fasts are strict and people pledge for self-determination and seek God blessing before starting them to finish them successful. 

On shivratri day devotees should take a second bath in the evening before doing shiva puja or visiting temple. 

Shiva puja should be done during night and devotees should break the fast between sunrise and before the end of chaturdashi tithi to get the maximum benefit of the vrat. 

According to one contradictory opinion devotees should break the fast only when chaturdashi tithi gets over, but it's believed that both shiva puja and parana breaking the fast should be done with chaturdashi tithi. 

Shiva moola mantra: om namah shivay

Rudra gayatri mantra: om tatpurushaya vidmahe mahadevy dhimahi, tanno rudrah prachodayat. 

Shiva stotram:-karpur gautam karunavataram, sansaar saram bhujagendra, bhavam bhavani sahitam namami. 

Shiva is big Lord all types of religion like the Hindu. Muslim. Jain. Parsi. Sikh etc .. Is prayers for Shiva. 

So this type of all the food. Vidhi(procees) . Is giving and follow in mahashivratri.
